Saanen Goat

The Saanen dairy goat originated in the Saanen Valley of Switzerland. Approximately 150 Saanens were imported into the United States from Switzerland between 1904 and the 1930's.

The Saanen is the largest dairy goat breed with rugged bone and plenty of vigor. They also are one of the top milk producers. Does should be feminine, however, and not coarse. Saanen are white or light cream in color, with white preferred. Spots on the skin are not discriminated against. Small spots of color on the hair are allowable, but not desirable. The hair should be short and fine, although a fringe over the spine and thighs is often present. Ears should be erect and alertly carried, preferably pointing forward. The face should be straight or dished. A tendency toward a Roman nose is discriminated against.

We have a very select small herd of Saanens. We were first introduced to the Iron Tooth herd owned by Joan and Don Zahniser at the 1988 National Show in Harrisburg, PA. A few years ago, we purchased a few does from them. We have since purchased animals from Kristin Loughlin in Stanwood,WA, McQuitty-Farm in Hillsboro,OH and Hi-Land Farm in Cornish Flat, NH. We have really come to enjoy this breed!
