TOGGENBURG GOATS
The Toggenburg goat originates from the Toggenburg Valley in the Swiss Canton of St. Gall. The Toggenburg breed is known as the oldest and purest breed of goats in Switzerland. Toggenburg goats were first introduced to England in 1884 and later, in 1893, William A. Shafer of Ohio imported 4 purebred Toggenburgs into the United States. By 1921, there had been enough importation of Toggenburg goats to establish a foundation stock in the US. Toggenburgs were the first breed of goats registered in the United States.
Toggenburg goats are one of the smaller Swiss breeds, but in recent years breeders have tended to breed for larger animals. Typically they are very deer-like in appearance. Breed standards indicate they must be a shade of brown with definitive white markings on their head, rump and legs. The Toggenburgs are hardy, alert and consistent breeders that can maintain a long lactation. Mammaries are usually well attached and globular.
We purchased our first Toggenburgs in 1996 from the Little Creek herd. The following year we purchased Sun-Kissed Razzddw Whinchezter from Eleanor Rider. His dam was a two time National Champion. He became the foundation sire of our Toggenburg herd. We are very indebted to both Eleanor and Al and Barbara Brown for introducing us to such beautiful animals. In 2004, the show string of Al and Barbara’s Little Creek herd came to live with us including many of their top Nationally placing Whinchezter daughters.
The highlight of our breeding program culminated with a Whinchezter daughter, SGCH Welbian Farm's Whin's Madison, going National Champion in 2004 and the same doe going Reserve National Champion in 2007. Another Whinchezter daughter, that we bred, became the Eastern Canadian National Champion. Most all of our herd Linear Appraise Excellent. Linebreeding has worked well for us as we see a lot of consistency in our offsprings. We have had five Spotlight Sale Consignments. We recently purchased a Spotlight Sale buck from Rowe Toggenburgs which we believe will add to the strength of our breeding program.

She was milking so much that it was hard to get any weight on her so we cut her back to once a day and finally dried her off to let her mature more. She is long, level and very dairy.
